Being the Change #CyberPD Part 3: Becoming a better observer

Even though I am late – really late – in finishing this post, I really wanted to use this opportunity to reflect. In this final reflection on Being the Change by Sara Ahmed, I was struck by the ideas around intent and impact and of becoming a better “observer of the world” and how they connect to coaching.

I am about to enter my first full year as a coach. I work in a community where I am an outsider – I am not First Nations, yet the students and many of the teachers I work with are. When I was reading this chapter, many of the ideas resonated with me. My experiences and perspectives may differ from those I work along-side: “I have only the experiences that have shaped me (127).” Coaches are often seen as experts that can help teachers change and grow as educators. They ask questions and offer support to help teachers hone their practice – I am not trying to “fix” teaching practices. I don’t and won’t always know what is best for the simple fact that I have different life experiences than my students and teachers – and this became more evident as  I read the final chapters of Being the Change. 

Listen more, talk less. This means that even though most resources on coaching talk about the importance of questioning to drive learning forward, asking lots of questions (well-intended though they may be) may not have the intended impact.”Where our response may begin, swing, hang or end in time depends on how we self-identify, how we see others, and our universe of obligation, not entirely on the event itself (126).” Intent and impact can be very different and to make sure that my message is clear I need to be deliberate and reflective as a coach… I need to become a better “observer of the world.”

Ahmed’s point in chapter 5 about intent vs impact connects well to learning I have done around communication and interference. In Instructional Coaching: A Partnership Approach to Improving Instruction, Jim Knight talks about how interference can mean that the message we are trying to send and what the listener hears can be very different, and that “when a conversation has implications for someone’s identity, a person often finds it difficult to hear the intended message being communicated (69).” And what is more personal than the way one teaches? As someone coming from the outside, I need to be aware that when working with teachers their identity is at stake – and this becomes even more relevant when working with colleagues from a different cultural background. While Ahmed discusses identity being at stake in relation to crises, I can’t help but draw connections to coaching. When coaching as someone from the outside, I need to take care that my questions and comments do not send a message that my perspective is more important or that there is one right way to do things. I need to be a better observer to determine when (and what) to ask, and when to listen and observe to build trust with the teachers I work with, while still communicating my belief that teachers can continually grow their expertise to make decisions as to what will best support their students.

In failing to keep these ideas in mind, I risk not only being ineffective as a coach, but I can damage relationships and lose the trust of my colleagues. I believe that when we value the identity, experiences, and perspectives of teachers (and students) we all learn more.

I once had a student ask me what I think the meaning of life is (one of many existential conversations that can sometimes happen when examining ethics and the mechanisms for life in a biology class). I responded with something like: “do all the good you can whenever you can.” I think after being a part of this book study, I would need to add that having good intentions is not enough… We must consider the impact our “good” actions have on others.

Being the Change #cyberPD Part 2: News

You know when sometimes you just feel at a loss? You feel like what is happening in the world doesn’t really make sense to you, and you’re not quite sure what to do about it… I’m having one of those times right now.

Lisa Corbett wrote about some things that are happening here in Ontario on her blog. I thought this might be a good opportunity to try out the “Moving Beyond Our Initial Thinking” lesson… So here I go (I focused on only one story at the moment, but the sex ed. curriculum changes are also deeply troubling!):

Doing this activity was eye-opening for me – it gave me time to think and reflect on the news this week.  As I continue through this book, I look forward to doing more of the work. It gives me a much clearer sense of the struggles, tensions, and roadblocks that students may face – and I feel that if I am going to ask teachers or students to do this, then I first have to dive in myself. Having the opportunity to learn from Ahmed’s Being the Change and from others in the #CyberPD group is a great way to think about how to deal with tough conversations that I might otherwise avoid.

One thing that adds to my feelings of loss is not having a classroom next year. Don’t get me wrong, I have some amazing colleagues that are doing this work, but I miss designing the kind of learning opportunities Sara Amhed talks about on a regular basis. I hope that in my coaching role, I can support teachers to incorporate social comprehension!

If we value identify and honor kids’ news, then strategize with them on how to muddle through the self-exploration and collaborative dialogue the incidentally occurs with all the questions they have, we will grow a generation the honors a range of perspectives and flexibility of thought (Ahmed 77).

This is the work.

 

#OneWordONT WHY

A new year, a new job, a new life! It is time for me to take some time to reflect and think about my practice, my learning, and my family. This past year has been a time of huge change in my life. I became a mother (well technically that was really in the last days of 2016, but who is counting?) I have started a new job and have had all the anxiety and self-doubt that many parents experience when leaving their child to return to work.

I was pretty sure my word for 2018 was going to be courage – I liked this word because I do need courage: courage to have important conversations, courage to tackle this new job, courage to leave my baby every morning, courage to write and open my thoughts to the world through this blog… But then I started writing, and it didn’t quite fit.

So, where am I going this year? To the beginning… I am going back to WHY.

Last week, I was reminded of the power of knowing your why. This video has been around for a long time, and it may be familiar to you:

It had been a few years since I had viewed this TedTalk. I needed the reminder that, to really motivate change, you need to know your why. I have felt off balance by going back to work. It has not been an easy transition, and it is easy to let the negativity get in… It is easy to think that so many things are beyond your control. By choosing this word, I think it will help me focus on the important thing – learning!

So, why do I do what I do? It really boils down to my belief that learning is life. It is through continuous learning that we are able to adapt, that we are able to grow, and that we are able to see new opportunities. If you are not learning, what is the point? As an educator, I feel that student learning needs to be at the heart of what I do. I need to support students and teachers to push themselves, to ask questions, and to experience the joy that learning can bring! As a parent, I want to instill a love of learning in my daughter. Maybe instill is not the right word… She already loves learning. You can see her face light up when she masters a new skill – like putting on her own hat! I suppose my job then is to nurture that mindset.

Why also works on a second, more conventional level. It is a question I need to use more regularly to challenge my assumptions, to go deeper into my own learning.

As I start out this year on this new adventure, I am glad for the opportunity to take this time to really think about my own learning and my practice. I need to remember WHY.
